The
National Academy of Sciences was created
by President Lincoln
on March 3, 1863 to "investigate, examine,
experiment, and report upon any subject of science
or art" whenever needed by any branch of the
federal government. With the growth of science
and technology in the decades to follow, the institution expanded to the National Research Council, the
National Academy of Engineering, and the Institute
of Medicine. Together, these four organizations
are known as the National Academies.
The
National Academies has been the location
of historical events and speeches, including
a major science policy address delivered by John
F. Kennedy on October 23, 1963 as part of its
100th anniversary celebration. It is
also home to the famous Albert Einstein
Memorial, located in its exterior gardens.
